In 2005, the Tanzanian Government Supported an initiative promoted by Emayani Beach Lodge, the tsetse fly Fund, recreational stakeholders, and surrounding local communities, to Deem Maziwe Island and its surrounding Reefs recognized as a marine conservation area. Securing the protection of this island and its surrounding sand Ecosystems was a vital step in ensuring the long-term sustainability of Basin's economy and natural marine environments.

The aim of this project and its Supporters, now called 'Friends of Maziwe', is to monitor and evaluate the health and biodiversity of Maziwe's coral Reefs, and Regulate the vitality of the coastal ecosystem as a whole.

One of the keystone projects of 'Friends of Maziwe' is protecting the sea turtle Population That depends on the sand island as a breeding ground. In addition, THEY assist in whale and dolphin monitoring, Promoting volunteer beach clean-ups, and have trained local community members to engage in patrol island.

HOW CAN YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THIS PROJECT?

In order to Sustain the Important work of 'Friends of Maziwe', we call on YOU for support. 50% of the operations are earned Costs Through visitor fees, turtle adoption programs, and generous Donations from NGOs, local Businesses, and Tourists. However, we still need to raise $ 10,000 annually to cover the deficit. To assist with fundraising efforts, we have introduced a Voluntary Annual Membership to 'Friends of Maziwe'. 

We have a big goal to Reach, and we invite YOU to help us protect this fundamental Tanzania's stretch of coastland.

The Friends of Maziwe have started an 'Adopt a Turtle' initiative to help fund the Costs for fuel to patrol Maziwe Island, and pay the team members working on the project, alongside a Yearly contribution to Shongo Village.
